TSA Approved Locks: The Factory Does Not Hold the Certificate
The factory does not hold the lock certification. The lock supplier does. That single fact decides who you should be asking for paperwork, and almost every supplier page in this category blurs it.
Here is how the certification actually works, what to ask for, and why the lock decision has to happen before the die is cut rather than after.
Who certifies a travel lock
The certifying body is Travel Sentry, not the TSA and not the case factory. Travel Sentry licenses the mark, the Red Diamond, and runs the master key system that screeners use. TSA LOCK is one of the brands under that system. Verified as of August 2026.
What that means in practice is simple. A lock is approved. A suitcase is not. When a supplier tells you their case is certified, they are describing a component they bought.
So write to the right term. TSA approved lock is correct. TSA lock and TSA certified are not, and using them in your own product copy is the kind of thing a retail buyer’s compliance team flags.
What to ask for, and from whom
Ask the case factory who makes the lock. Then ask for the lock supplier’s license details in writing. A factory that cannot produce that in a day is either buying through a trader or buying from whoever quoted lowest that month.
Three things belong in that answer.
The lock maker’s name. Not the case factory’s name.
The license or approval reference the lock carries. This is the line that gets left off, and without it there is nothing to check.
Which of your models the lock goes into. A license covering one lock body does not cover a different mechanism on a different case.

The lock decision comes before the tooling, not after
This is the part that costs money when it goes wrong.
Order of operations here is fixed. Body structure first, then the lock. A zippered body takes a zipper lock. A frame body with no zipper takes a frame mounted lock. They are not interchangeable and you cannot swap between them once the profile exists.
On a frame case the lock cavity is milled into the aluminum extrusion when the die is cut. After the die is signed off, that cavity is where it is. Change the lock model later and you are paying for a second die, not editing a drawing.
Our aluminum frame cases close with two TSA approved combination locks, metal reinforced corners, and die cast hinges. The two lock layout is a structural decision as much as a security one, because a single center lock on a frame case leaves the long edge free to flex.
What buyers ask us about hardware
We cleaned the bot traffic out of our own inquiry forms and were left with 2,424 real messages. Hardware questions covering locks, handles, wheels, zippers, hinges, and corners came up in 181 of them.
The pattern is worth noting.
Can the shell color, zipper, handle, wheels, and lock all be color-matched?

Every one of these is about appearance. Not one asks who holds the lock approval, which is the question that matters when a shipment gets stopped.
Three ways this goes wrong
Buying the mark instead of the lock. A red diamond printed on a lock body is not the same as a licensed lock. Ask for the paperwork, not the picture.
Assuming the certificate transfers. It covers the lock, in the configuration it was approved in. Changing the lock body between your sample and your bulk run means the paperwork no longer describes what shipped.
Deciding the lock at sample review. By then the die exists. This is the most expensive of the three and the most common.
What we will not claim
We do not hold the lock approval and we will not imply that we do. We build the case, we buy the lock from a supplier who is licensed, and we can put you in touch with the paperwork.
We also will not fit a lock we have not run before without testing it first. If you arrive with a lock spec from a supplier we do not know, we fit and test it before pricing the case. That adds days to the sample, which is better than adding a recall to the season.
We take orders from 300 pieces on stock 5052 through existing molds, and we quote below that. Under 300 with new tooling the die cost will not amortize, and that includes the die that carries your lock cavity.
If the closure is still open on your program, send the drawing with the body type marked and we will come back on feasibility before quoting.
The lock cavity shares its operation with any other pocket cut into the shell. On a powered case that includes the battery bay, and the smart luggage battery rules decide whether that bay can be sealed at all.

Do you hold any relevant certifications (ISO, BSCI, REACH)?
Audit and test reports are released on request at first inquiry. For lock approval specifically, the certificate sits with the lock supplier rather than with us, and we can provide their details for the locks in your build.
Can the shell color, zipper, handle, wheels, and lock all be color-matched?
Yes on all five. Color matching is a finish decision and it does not affect approval, but the lock model itself has to be settled earlier because of the cavity.
Can you produce a fully custom mold, or do you only customize existing designs?
Both. Existing molds cover most travel sizes and carry a defined lock cavity already. A fully custom mold lets you place the cavity where you want it, and it changes your timeline more than your unit cost.
What is your MOQ for this type of product, and do you support small test batches?
300 pieces on stock 5052 running existing molds, and we quote below that. Under 300 on new tooling the die cost will not amortize.
What is the estimated production lead time after deposit and sample approval?
45 days for bulk on a confirmed sample. Sampling before that runs 7 to 15 days.
Do you customize from customer’s drawings and specs?
Yes. Send a 3D file or a dimensioned 2D drawing with the body type and lock model marked. Those two fields gate the tooling.
