The acronyms are not the decision. The decision is who owns the drawing and who pays for the tooling. Everything else follows from those two answers, and a supplier who leads with the acronym instead of the answers is selling you a label.

Most first programs should be ODM and think they want OEM. Here is how to tell which one you are actually running.

What the two words mean on an invoice

ODM. The factory owns the design. You pick a body it already tools, and you change what does not require a new die. Logo, color, lining, packaging, interior fittings.

OEM. You own the design. You send a drawing, the factory builds tooling to it, and the resulting profile exists because you paid for it.

Everything sold as a hybrid sits somewhere on that line, and the useful question is always which side of it your specific change falls on.

The one question that settles it

Does your change require a new die?

A new size does. A different shell material does. A different closure does, because on a frame case the lock cavity is milled into the extrusion when the die is cut. A logo does not. A color does not. An interior layout usually does not, because interiors are cut rather than tooled.

Ask a supplier to sort your change list into those two buckets before quoting. The list they hand back tells you more about whether they understand your program than any capability page will.

What buyers ask us

We cleaned the bot traffic out of our own inquiry forms and were left with 2,424 real messages. Customization and private label came up in 257 of them, and in 19 percent of everything received in the last six months. It is the single most common subject we get.

What the wording shows is that most buyers have not made the OEM or ODM decision yet, and do not know they need to.

Do you offer OEM/white-label services including custom logo, hardware, and material selection?
Do you customize from customer’s drawings and specs?
Can you produce a fully custom mold, or do you only customize existing designs?

The third one is the right question. The first two can both be answered yes by a supplier who means very different things by them.

Why most first programs should be ODM

Because tooling is the one cost that does not scale down, and a first run is exactly when you know least about demand.

We hold 5052 and run it through existing molds. That path gets a branded case to market at 300 pieces with sampling in 7 to 15 days and bulk in 45. The same program with a new die adds tooling cost and tooling time in front of all of that, for a silhouette you have not yet proven anyone wants.

There is a version of this that sounds like a compromise and is not. Launch on an existing profile, sell through, then tool the second generation with everything the first generation taught you. The brands that regret their tooling are almost always the ones that bought it first.

When OEM is the right call

When the shape is the product.

If your differentiation is a proportion, a silhouette, or a structural feature that no existing profile carries, then an existing mold cannot deliver it and no amount of finish work will fake it. That is a real reason to tool and it is worth the money.

It is also the right call when you intend to defend the design. We hold ten utility model and design patents on our own case structures, all searchable by number through the China National Intellectual Property Administration public bulletin, which is open without an account, as of August 2026. A design you tooled is a design you can protect. A design you selected from a catalog is not.

The term to settle before you sign

Mold ownership. Put it in the proforma invoice rather than the email thread, and get it in the same document as the price.

Ask every supplier on your list the same three things. Who holds the mold, what happens to it if you move production, and whether the drawings are released to you at sign off. We put our answer in writing at quoting rather than leaving it to be discovered later, and you should require that of anyone you are comparing us against.

What we will not do

We will not tool a program that has not been sized. If your first run is well under 300 pieces and needs a new die, the die cost will not amortize and a supplier running an existing profile will quote you better than we will. We say that on the first call.

We will not describe an ODM job as OEM to make a quote look more bespoke. If you are buying an existing profile with your logo on it, that is what the invoice will say.

And we will not start tooling on an unresolved closure. Zippered body takes a zipper lock, frame body with no zipper takes a frame mounted lock, and the cavity is cut once.

If you are deciding between the two routes now, send us your change list rather than a drawing and we will sort it into what needs tooling and what does not before anything is quoted.

Whichever route you take, the factory still needs the same inputs to price it. That list is what a tech pack has to contain.

Either route runs on the same clock once the drawing is fixed. The segments are laid out in where the calendar actually goes.

Whoever owns the design, the steel is a separate question. That is who owns the tooling once it is paid for.

Before either route, settle who you are actually buying from. See agent or direct factory.

Frequently asked questions

Do you offer OEM/white-label services including custom logo, hardware, and material selection?

Yes. Logo, hardware selection, material, lining, and packaging are all available on existing profiles, which makes that route ODM rather than OEM in the strict sense. The distinction matters for who owns the design, not for what the case looks like.

Can you produce a fully custom mold, or do you only customize existing designs?

Both. Existing molds cover most travel sizes and get you to market fastest. A fully custom mold is right when the silhouette is the product, and it changes your timeline more than your unit cost.

Do you customize from customer’s drawings and specs?

Yes. Send a 3D file or a dimensioned 2D drawing with the closure type marked. We come back with a feasibility note before quoting.

What is your MOQ for this type of product, and do you support small test batches?

300 pieces on stock 5052 running existing molds, and we quote below that. Under 300 on new tooling the die cost will not amortize.

What is the estimated production lead time after deposit and sample approval?

45 days for bulk on a confirmed sample. Sampling before that runs 7 to 15 days.

Is there an option for low or no minimum order quantities for emerging brands?

Low, yes. None, no. A zero minimum on a custom case means stock with a logo applied afterward, which is a different product with a different failure rate.
